Ozempic® (semaglutide) is a prescription GLP-1 medication. Ozempic injection is FDA-approved for certain adults with type 2 diabetes to help improve blood sugar, and for specific cardiovascular and kidney risk-reduction indications.

Ozempic is not FDA-approved as a weight-loss medication. Some people taking Ozempic for an approved indication may experience weight loss. Your clinician can help determine which treatment is appropriate for your health needs and goals.

Ozempic works by acting like GLP-1, a naturally occurring hormone involved in blood sugar regulation, appetite, and digestion. It can help your body release insulin when needed and slows gastric emptying.

Ozempic injection is taken once a week on the same day each week. Your clinician will prescribe the appropriate dose and may adjust it over time based on your treatment plan.

Ozempic is injected under the skin of the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Follow the instructions provided with your medication and the guidance of your healthcare provider.

If you miss a dose of Ozempic, take it as soon as possible within 5 days of the missed dose. If more than 5 days have passed, skip the missed dose and take your next dose on your regularly scheduled day.

The most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation. Side effects can vary from person to person, so contact your healthcare provider if you have symptoms that are severe, persistent, or concerning.

Ozempic should not be used if you or a family member have had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), or if you have had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide or an ingredient in Ozempic. Your clinician will review your medical history before prescribing treatment.

Tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Ozempic should be stopped at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy because semaglutide remains in the body for an extended period.
